Your Local A-Permit Experts in Los Angeles

The A-Permit is the City of Los Angeles' process for confirming that minor street construction meets City design and material specifications and that construction work is properly inspected.

A-Permit.com specializes in minor street construction within the public right-of-way — the street easements that contain City streets, lanes, alleys, parkways, and sidewalks. Construction within the public right-of-way is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Public Works, Bureau of Engineering (BOE).

Whether you need a new driveway installation, sidewalk repair due to tree root damage (which may qualify as a "No Fee" permit), curb and gutter repair, or streetscape fixture installation, we manage the entire A-Permit process from application to final inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an A-Permit?

An A-Permit is the City of Los Angeles' permit for minor street construction in the public right-of-way. It covers work like driveway installation/repair, sidewalk installation/repair, curb and gutter repair, streetscape fixtures, street tree wells, curb drains, and minor street resurfacing — as long as the work does not alter an established flowline of a gutter or the existing grade of a sidewalk or street.

Who can apply for an A-Permit?

There are currently no requirements on who can apply. Generally, it is the property owner(s) or their representative. Proof of ownership is not required. Applications can be started online or by visiting a BOE District Office in person.

Is there a fee for sidewalk repair due to tree root damage?

An A-Permit for repair of sidewalk damage caused by street tree roots does not require the applicant to pay a permit fee — it's considered a 'No Fee' permit. The BOE District Office requires a photo of the damaged area to waive the fees.

What happens if the work alters the grade or flowline?

If the proposed work will alter the established flowline of a gutter or alter the existing grade of a sidewalk or street, a 'B' Permit is required instead of an A-Permit.

What specifications must A-Permit work follow?

All A-Permit construction work must be performed in accordance with the latest edition of the 'Greenbook', Standard Specifications for construction, and meet City design and material specifications.
